new berlin over marquette at state 2009
vballguru22
Any predictions on the top 10 in state for next year?

Top Ten Teams in my mind would be New Berlin, Marquette, Tosa East, Waukesha West, Nicolet, Middleton, Catholic Memorial, Kaukauna, Kettle Moraine, and westosha central.

Here is the 2009 State Bracket

datruF
1. Marquette
2. CMH
3. Nicolet
4. New Berlin Eisenhower/West
5. Waukesha West
6. Kettle Moraine
7. Westosha Central
8. Tosa East
9. Arrowhead (new coach there will turn the program around...although they did graduate 11 seniors last year)
10. Shorewood (just because I can't think of any other and a Kevin Gem team will always be good by the end of the year)

On another note, they need to just start seeding the playoffs. At least the top 2 seeds in each sectional (so the top 16 teams in the state). The sectionals are so flawed. Some are stacked, others are awful. Should have the top 8 teams at State, but that does not happen unfortunately.

The WIAA will never let that happen. They only care about regional representation not quality of competition. People can complain about sectionals all they want but they are never going to change. Just allowing them to actually seed the sectionals instead of the old way of having assignments predetermined was a huge deal.

The Mader brothers are big and powerful (especially the older one) but they do not have a supporting cast at East, I believe they are losing their big outside hitter and setter and much more.

The FVA teams that will have a chance are ONCE AGAIN Kimberly, Kaukauna (clear favorite), and Appleton North. Same as usual.

Thanks to Brad for setting those up. Gives everybody a little sneak preview of what's to come in the high school season and gets the excitement going into the season.

you don't have to call out brad on this one, maybe he just forgot...or maybe in his opinion they won't be a contender this year!

instead of being sarcastic about it, you could just state that you BELIEVE that Tosa West should be on the list.

State finals will be a good one this year though! A MUHS, New Berlin match-up will be fun to watch no matter how young or old the season is.

For OH's, Trevor Metz and Dan Thew (both of MUHS) should definitely be on this list. There are obv. many goodOH's, but I would for sure say that both these guys will be real solid at OH this season...

yeah thew and metz should be on the list

Anyways to go off what people were saying about thew and metz. If marquette wants to win another championship they will start Heinen and Hutz at OH and have Schneck set.

Agreed. Especially since Heinen is one of the best Rightside blockers in the state. His block would be very much missed for Marquette on the rightside.

As for my thoughts on this season. I think it will be a season long battle between Marquette and New Berlin. Both of very talented players. New Berlin is stronger on the outside but I feel Marquette is more solid all they way around. Although Marquette lost 9 seniors last year. They return 7 players who have a ton of volleyball experience. New Berlin returns their entire starting lineup if I am not correct. What people look past in New Berlin, I think, is a strong middle option as well in Beeler/Olson. They are a great combo to throw off the other team when Dejno is in the backrow. These two teams will have very competitive matches through the year.

CMH, Tosa East, Nicolet, and Waukesha West are contenders as well with each possessing some very good club players.
LeftyOppo2
yeah that'd be great to have a (most likely) D1-bound setter play OH his senior season...:-)

We have a really good middle named matt fevior... He played with us at northshore for the 2nd half of our season last year... I think he will probably get hm all state

Also

Brett kaczmarek is really good.. He is a outside from Bradford and he just jumps out of the gym and swings hard

1. Marquette- despite losing 9 or 10 seniors they're still number 1 until someone can beat them, still have a ton of talent
2. New Berlin- KING DEJNO
3. Nicolet- they took 2nd at state last year when few probably thought they would, still have a lot of talent behind toli, I would expect to see them in the state tourney again
4. Middleton- always a solid team, they'll be at state again unless jimmy's people can stop them
5. Waukesha West- a solid group of players all around, soldberg is a force in the middle
the rest of the top 10 is a toss up I have no idea what the FVA teams are gonna be like and a lot of the teams in the milwaukee area lost a good amount of seniors we'll just have to see when the racine tourney comes around.

He is a good setter but what D1 school?????????? Loyola has 75 setters on thier roster including Hutz who is getting money to ride the pine, brought in a big time cali setter and smalzer to set from illinois. I just dont know where he would go and have a legit chance to play D3 seems like the best fit for him which is still really good.

QUOTE(winninnats @ Jul 13 2009, 10:18 AM) *

haha i hope this is some big joke? first of all hutz started as a redshirt sophomore last year so i'm not sure what you're talking about there. second ohio state is basically on their knees to get him, along with cal state northridge who's starting to recruit him pretty strong. i'm sure many more are too, but i know for a fact that those two very good D1 programs are recruiting him. he'll eventually be a starter on a D1 team.

Listen i hope he plays D1 ball and does well. I dont think he will ever go to northridge and play. As for ohio state maybe, but the y have a good young setter now who is taller and Ohio state is starting to get big time california recruits to come thier. I wish him the best I just dont see him actuall playing (on the court/starting) D1 ball. nothing is wrong with that just what i think.

THE MASK

I thought I would summerize the Wisconsin finishes from JOs:

18s - Northshore wins the Bronze (13th overall) Considering the results of their opening day pool, a great job to come back and win the Bronze. Southwest finished 31st. Looking at the scores, they had some close matches, if only they could have pulled-out 2 or 3 of those...

17s - Lightning finished tied for 5th overall. Great job. Northshore, despite only receiving an at large bid, finishes 19th, lost in the 1st round of Bronze.

16s - Northshore wins the Bronze (13th overall), another great job. Lightning finished in 30th.

15s - Lightning wins the Silver (5th overall) and Northshore finished tied for 7th. Northshore looks like they had a 1 game playoff to get to the Gold bracket, but lost 29-27. Due to lack of teams in this age group, there was only a 4-team Gold and Silver bracket, so really, when was the last time Wis. had 2 teams in the Gold. I think either of these teams can win a National Championship, perhaps playing each other for it.

14s - Northshore finishes 11th, lost in the 1st round of Bronze. I was disappointed for them, because I thought they had a chance to be in the Gold.

I'll add in my own understanding. For 18s the seedings were awful. There is no way OCVC was the 24 best team in the tournament, and then to have a solid 2 seed in APV and a very underrated Surf City team all in the NSMVC pool was pretty disappointing. NSMVC had a chance to take 1st had they won their last pool play match on day one, but AVP was solid and they were also playing against the reffing team. If AVP won Surf City would take 3rd in the pool, keeping them alive to move into gold contention, but if NSMVC won they would take 4th, dropping them out of gold contention, and they were the reffing team. There were some very, very questionable calls and NSMVC just couldn't pull through. For them to stay motivated enough to still take 13th was a pretty big accomplishment, as they weren't able to meet expectations but still made it a respectable tournament. Kind of disappointing watching Riptides win the National Championship after NSMVC beat them in So Cal.

For 17s Lightning had a great showing. They lost to Balboa Bay on day 3 and then lost in 3 in the Gold quarterfinals. I believe they had a 21-17 (?) lead in the game they lost and blew it and then were up 11-9 game 3 and lost 15-11(?). Somewhat disappointing to go down like that but a great showing. NSMVC goes in ranked 33 and takes 17 (I believe they lost 1st round of Bronze which would make them tied for 17 with 3 other teams). Again very solid all things considered.

For 16s NSMVC got stuck with SCVC and Balboa Bay in their day 2 pool, the 2 best teams in the Nation for that age group. Played well both first games and fell apart in the 2nd games. Didn't drop a match after that. Would have been fun to see what they could have done had SCVC not been upset on day 1 and fallen into their pool. Lightning fell apart on day 3.

For 15s both NSMVC and Lightning had great showings but both had their chances on day 3. Lightning was up 23-17 in game 2 against the Mets (PR team) and lost that game, and then lost the 3rd game. They win that game and they're in gold. NSMVC lost to Balboa Bay, who lost to Piterres, who NSMVC beat. Balboa Bay won tie breaker of games and, after dominating Piterres in 2, had to play a 1 game playoff to 25 to get into gold. NSMVC was leading the whole game by 3-4 points, and just couldn't close the deal. If 1 or 2 players switch over 1 way or the other they win JOs easily..

For 14s I didn't see much but there are just too many PR teams that dominate that age group.

Most of the NSMVC 14s players are going to MUHS so probably not there. Zach from that team will start on WFB's varsity team. 1 of the OHs might play varsity at Pius.

Nick Wildes, setter from the NS 14's has a chance to make the varsity squad this year at Waukesha West. Wouldnt see much court time, but he's got a chance to be a spot server and back up setter.
