Fifteen of the top college players from the women’s 2013 NCAA season were invited to join the national team staff for an eight-week winter training block in Anaheim, Calif., beginning Jan. 27. The session will give the players, mostly seniors who just finished up their college eligibility, a chance to demonstrate their potential while most veteran members of the national team complete their pro seasons overseas.
Kelly Reeves, who earned All-American honors for sand volleyball last spring, will be in attendance in Anaheim but remains enrolled in classes at UCLA so could yet decide to compete in her senior sand season as well. Betsi Metter and Kat Luft from Loyola Marymount also competed on their sand team last year and plan to participate again this spring after the national-team training block.
Team USA staff invited only one junior to participate in the training block, Washington’s Krista Vansant. The 2013 AVCA National Player of the Year doesn’t plan to take any time off school (or her first season of collegiate sand volleyball), however, so will only be in Anaheim for a few days.
