New Year, New Music

Some artists to keep your eye on in the coming year.

A new year always brings with it great anticipation of new music. Whether it’s from one of your favorite artists or an as-yet undiscovered musician who will blow your mind, new music can be very powerful. Justin Timberlake had two new albums last year – did they really move you? And Lorde came along with her anti-pop song “Royals” that was so popular it played everywhere from hip hop radio stations to NPR.

The music world moves very differently now than it used to. Artists no longer give six months’ notice on a new album. Because of our short attention span, they know we would just forget they announced it anyway. This means that none of us can know exactly what will release this year. Artists like Kanye West and Pharrell Williams basically live in the studio, so we could hear new music from them as son as tomorrow, and EDM artists don’t even release a full-length album – ever; they’re plenty successful when they just release a single and proceeded to tour the world on the back of that one song. However, not knowing every album scheduled to be released this year leaves room for the unknown, and isn’t that what we like about music? The way your heart speeds up when you hear a new song for the first time and it absolutely turns your world upside down.

A few artists have stated they are back in the studio with plans to release an album in 2014. To get you excited for their new music, I present you with a list of my favorite songs from their last album or a single you may have overlooked.
