At Hill Air Force Base in northern Utah, May 2-13, athletes from the Army, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, and Marines gathered to compete in the 2013 Armed Forces Men’s and Women’s Beach and Indoor Volleyball Championship. Athletes in the tournament included active duty members of the military, along with some National Guard members and reserves.

On the beach, Army athletes dominated the competition, winning both the men’s and women’s divisions. In the women’s final, Capt. Rachael Tax and 1st Lt. Shara DeMarco defeated Navy Lt. j.g. Abbie Merkl and Lt. j.g. Jesselyn Lavalley. On the men’s side, Army Reserve Sgt. Joe Rossetter and Staff Sgt. Lewis Dennis took out the Navy’s Lt. Chris Lambert and Seaman Noel Garcia. This was the first time since the event’s creation in 2010 that the Navy didn’t sweep the medal stand in the beach competition.

Army players also swept the indoor tournament a few days after the beach tournament wrapped up. The women’s team came out unscathed with a perfect 6-0 record, while the Army men lost only one game to come out 5-1.

At the end of the tournament, the best indoor players from each of the squads were named to the All-Armed Forces Team, and played together at the USA Volleyball Open Nationals in Louisville, May 24-29.
