College graduations, real beach weather, fresh blueberries, brand new flip flops, these are all signs that summer has finally arrived (or at least is right around the next corner). For many of us summer means giving the sneakers a rest and hitting the beach courts a little more often. Fresh fruit, a cool glass of water, and a warm breeze are just the cherry on top of this splendid season.
The conclusion of this year’s men’s volleyball season will not only mean looking towards the NCAA championships and the crowning of another winner, but will also mark the end of an era. Legendary UCLA coach Al Scates is hanging up the clipboard and walking away from college coaching after a half century of building his coaching legacy (50 Years of Fingerprints). He will be looked upon as not only one of the best volleyball coaches of all time, but one of the best leaders in all of collegiate sports. Coach Scates, we salute you.
As the weather changes we move from the indoor collegiate game, outside to the hustle and excitement of beach competition. This summer brings some uncertainty and questions when it comes to the beach volleyball scene in the United States, but with the London Olympic Games looming in our very near future, the international anticipation and buzz is palpable (Summer Schedules Collide).
Summertime also means stocking up on new gear, and who doesn’t love a new bikini or a fresh pair of shades? We rounded up a handful of NVL players on Newport Beach to model some of the best and most functional gear available for summer volleyball this year (Just Beachy). Suits, tops, board shorts, sunglasses – we have it all!
Whatever the summer means to you, take this one by the reigns and run with it. We predict one heck of a beach season.
