We often look to January as the time when we are all afforded a fresh start and new things are beginning and getting off the ground. But halfway through the year, in the summer months, the same kind of rebirth can just as easily happen. Take for example the National Volleyball League; from the ashes of the AVP a new and exciting league has risen. They held their first tourney in conjunction with the Preakness horse race in Baltimore, Md., and will have their second showing at the end of this month in Malibu. Players from all over the U.S. are jumping into this league with a renewed sense of excitement for American beach volleyball.
And then of course there was the momentous first accomplished by the Ohio State men’s volleyball team in the form of the program’s first NCAA National Title. In honor of this achievement, and decades of hard work at the helm of the squad, we have honored head coach Pete Hanson with our distinguished Coach of the Year award. Also look for Buckeyes Steven Kehoe, Shawn Sangrey, John Klanac and Kevin Heine who all made our 2011 All-American teams.
To pull all of these “firsts” and exciting accomplishments together, we are psyched to have Matt Fuerbringer on our cover. Fuerby has been around the beach scene for quite some time, and his laid-back family-man style, paired with a commendable work ethic, is exactly the kind of player we like to feature on our cover. We wish him—and all the other beach players who give their all on the sand throughout the scorching summer months—the best of luck.
