Two-time Olympic gold medalists and reigning champs Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor have announced plans to reunite for an attempt at a third consecutive beach volleyball gold medal at the London Olympic Games. Walsh told VBM that a lot of thought and prayer went into their decision to return to the Olympic arena as a team.
“When Misty told me she wanted to play it really took me by surprise,” Walsh, who has taken some time apart from her longtime partner for the last two years, said. “But we have such a history and I love her … We plan on being even better and more solid.”
Walsh and May-Treanor have dominated in the past two Olympics, going undefeated in all 28 sets of their 14 combined matches in 2004 and 2008. This time around, Walsh said the pair will be spending most of their training
and social time together, mixing Pilates and beach workouts into their preparation, and focusing on another gold.
“We are hanging out together socially, which makes us even stronger and that much more tight,” Walsh said. “We are at a stage where we just want to enjoy the ride.”
The couple’s journey begins with the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour opener in Brasilia, Brazil, April 17 – 23.
